As a school community, we care about the future of our planet and are working towards becoming an Eco-School. We have a fantastic Eco-Team, made up of children from across the school, staff and governors and parents. Their role is to raise awareness of the environment, encourage children and staff to think about their environmental impact in their everyday lives and drive change within the school to help make a difference.
Eco Team updates - Autumn term
Its great to have the Eco Team back in school and welcome two new members from Oak class. Although meeting as a team is harder this year, that won't stop us working to make our school better for the environment. Our plans for this term include:
- Hold a virtual Collective Worship to update the school community on the Eco Team
- Plant some wild flower seeds in Axbridge School orchard to attract more wildlife in spring
- Put up posters in each classroom reminding everyone to turn off lights, turn off taps and recycle paper and food waste.
Recycling at Axbridge First School
We are part of a number of recycling schemes open to the school and wider community. Specific waste can be dropped off at School or Nursery and we are able to send it away to be recycled.
Terracycle scheme - we accept yoghurt and baby food pouches and their lids of any brand. We can also accept Ella's Kitchen snack packaging.
Recycle More - recycle your used batteries to avoid them ending up in landfill. Drop them off at the school office or your child's classroom.
Bags of help - recycle your old clothes, shoes, hats, handbags, soft toys and jewellery. The clothes bank is located in the school car park.
Reusable beeswax wraps
Stuck for a gift for a friend or relative? Why not have a go at making reusable beeswax wraps just like Year 4 did? They are really easy and are a great alternative to cling film or foil to wrap sandwiches or food in the fridge.

About Eco Schools
The Eco School programme is a global initiative to encourage schools to think more about their impact on the environment and how to reduce it. This involved raising awareness in the school, having pupil involvement in decision making and implementing positive change within school and the school community.
So far, our projects have included:
- planting a small orchard and wildlife area in the school field to provide a valuable habitat for wildlife
- Introducing composting bins in all classrooms for fruit waste from morning snack
- Litter picking on the school field and playground
- Making re-usable beeswax food wraps with Year 4
- Taking part in recycling programmes for yoghurt pouches, baby food pouches, batteries and clothing
We have also been really lucky to have guest speakers from Carymoor Environmental Trust and Water Aid come into school to highlight important ways we can help the environment in school and at home.
